Cystic Fibrosis-related Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders Clinic

The Cystic Fibrosis-related Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders Clinic at Texas Children’s Hospital provides care for children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and diabetes or other endocrine problems.

Although cystic fibrosis is usually thought of as a disease that affects the lungs, it can affect other body systems as well, especially the endocrine system, which is made up of the glands and organs that make and release hormones into the blood stream. These hormones control many important functions including blood sugar control, growth and bone health.

In addition to diabetes, patients with cystic fibrosis may experience other endocrine problems such as:

  • poor growth
  • delayed puberty
  • bone health issues
  • thyroid problems
  • low blood sugars
  • abnormal glucose tests

At this clinic, children with CF and diabetes have access to excellent specialized endocrine care tailored to their goals and needs. The program is led by Lina Merjaneh, MD, a national expert in CF endocrinology with an extensive clinical and research experience in CF-related diabetes and endocrinology.

We provide an individualized endocrine plan for each patient that takes into account recent advances and changes in CF treatment. Our team work closely with the Cystic Fibrosis Care Center team in Pulmonary Medicine to provide excellent multidisciplinary care to patients with CF.

If you are concerned that your child with CF might have an endocrine disorder, please discuss this with your CF health team and ask for a referral to our endocrine clinic for further evaluation and management.
