Texas Children's Hospital announces new chief of the division of pediatric urology

HOUSTON - (March 14, 2013) - Renowned pediatric urology surgeon Dr. David Roth has been named the chief of urology at Texas Children's Hospital. Roth, whose appointment was effective December 2012, was also recently appointed as chief of pediatric urology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), where he will continue his role as professor of urology and pediatrics and serve as The Edmond T. As a prominent leader in the field of pediatric urology for nearly 30 years, Roth has distinguished himself in a variety of research, clinical and academic roles. His clinical interests include urinary tract infection and reflux, congenital abnormalities of the genitalia, and urinary tract obstruction of the newborn. His primary research is directed toward improving surgical outcomes in children with urologic disease. He has authored more than 75 book chapters and publications in various academic and medical journals and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including his recognition and inclusion on the list of Best Doctors in America each year since 1996.


Roth is preceded in this position by Dr. Edmond Gonzales, who serves as the surgical director of Texas Children's Hospital West Campus. Gonzales, who was previously appointed as the first surgeon-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital in 2008, has played a crucial role in developing the department of Urology at Texas Children's and BCM in his nearly 40 years involved with the institutions. Gonzales' pioneering work in the field of pediatric urology and pediatric urology education was recognized in 2012 by the American Academy of Pediatrics with the Urology medal.

Board-certified by the American Board of Urology, Roth received his undergraduate degree from Claremont Men's College in Claremont, CA and earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After completing his surgical residency program at BCM in Houston, he went on to pursue specialized training in urology. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric urology surgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.
