News

HOUSTON – (April 24, 2017) – Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics, has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s “34 Leaders Who Are Changing Health Care.”

“I’m excited to be recognized for our work at the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine to combat neglected tropical diseases in Houston, throughout the state of Texas and on the U.S. Gulf Coast, as well as in areas of extreme poverty globally,” said Hotez. “Today our faculty at Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital are making the next generation of vaccines and diagnostics through our Texas Children’s Center for Vaccine Development.”

Recognized for his work in research and advocacy, Hotez is a world-renowned expert in neglected tropical diseases, the most common diseases affecting the world’s poor. Hotez founded the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in 2011.

“We’re thrilled that Dr. Hotez has received this well-deserved recognition,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine. “He is an advocate for the poorest people who are suffering from devastating diseases and do not have the ability to advocate for themselves, and he is a public health champion who focuses on the incredible importance of vaccines to keep people healthy.”

Hotez joins others on the Fortune Magazine list, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Bill Gates.
