Get "Me Time" for Free
Once you get the kids back in school, take a little time for
yourself. It’s a proven fact that you’re a better parent when you
have some “me time”. Whether it’s time spent alone or with
friends—just a few moments away can help you rejuvenate and refocus.
And, you’ll be more patient, loving and fun when you return!
In
today’s tough economic times you may not be able to splurge on an
expensive night on the town. But you can still find ways to escape
and reenergize — without spending a dime. Here are a few ideas to get
you going:

"Me Time" — It’s Like Oxygen |
| |
Armin Brott, author of 6
critically acclaimed books on fatherhood, likens “me
time” to the "flight attendant theory." When you're
on a plane, the flight attendants instruct
passengers to put their oxygen mask on first and then help their children. The same
principle applies to parenting. You can’t help
anyone else with their needs if yours aren’t being
met. If you don’t take care of yourself first,
you’ll be distracted and stressed—and unable to give
your kids the full attention they deserve.

Relax in Your Room
Slip away to your room and pretend you’re not home. If you enjoy baths, then load the tub with bubbles and jump in. Or, catch up on
your favorite TV shows, read the paper, write in your journal or just sit in silence—do whatever YOU
find relaxing!
Get Your Game On
Call up some friends and tell them to bring it on. Whatever your group likes to
play—poker, Pictionary™, Bunco, or a quiet game of Scrabble™—the
possibilities are endless! And for the young set, nothing says fun
like a game of flag football. But don’t get too carried away—you will
pay for it later!
Attend a Gardening or Cooking Class
Many local nurseries and culinary stores offer complimentary classes
on techniques, tips and trends. Not only will you enjoy yourself,
but you’ll reap lasting benefits in the garden as well as the
kitchen.
Exercise
Hit the gym and get your blood pumping. You can even take a buddy
along for a little “friendly competition.” You’re sure to feel
renewed energy after pumping some iron!
Get Back to Nature
Spending time outside in the fresh air will clear your head and give
you new perspective. There are many public parks where you can go
hiking, fishing or enjoy bird watching. Even a quick breather on
your back porch can help you recharge.
Take a Leisurely Drive
Being behind the wheel gives a sense of control you may not find at
home. So, take to the street and explore a new area of town—all by
yourself or with a friend.
Escape with a Book
A good book can take you to another world—without going anywhere at
all. Check out your local library or book store and you’re sure to
find the peace and solitude you’re looking for. Many libraries and
book stores offer free programs that you can take advantage of,
including book clubs.
